Before you fall for the sofa, will it fit your life?
A sofa can fit the room perfectly and still be completely wrong for the people living in it.

The short answer
Start with how your household actually sits, moves and relaxes. Then measure the room, the walking space and every doorway the sofa must pass through. Style comes after that.
The showroom can fool you
A large showroom makes almost any sofa look neat and well behaved. Put the same piece in an apartment with a coffee table, side chair, toy basket and television console, and it can swallow the room.
Before shopping, use masking tape to mark the sofa’s full footprint on your floor. Live with the outline for a day. Walk past it carrying groceries. Open the balcony door. Pull out the dining chair. If everybody has to turn sideways, the sofa is already too big.
How do you really sit?
Some people sit upright with both feet on the floor. Others curl up, nap, work on a laptop or watch a three-hour film with the whole family. Those habits decide whether you need a supportive seat, a deep lounge, a chaise or separate chairs.
Seat depth matters as much as overall width. A deep sofa can feel luxurious to a tall person and exhausting to someone shorter whose feet never reach the floor. Try it in the position you use at home, not the polite showroom pose.
Measure the empty space too
Furniture measurements tell you what the sofa occupies. Good room planning also measures what remains: the route to the kitchen, the gap around the coffee table and the space needed to clean behind it.
A smaller sofa with one movable chair often gives a room more flexibility than a giant L-shape. You can rearrange it for guests, conversation or television instead of allowing one piece of furniture to dictate the whole room.
The delivery-day disaster
The sofa fits the living room. Wonderful. Now check the front gate, lift door, stair landing, corridor corner and apartment entrance. Many expensive mistakes happen between the delivery truck and the room.
Ask for the packaged dimensions, whether the legs come off and whether the sofa separates into modules. Photograph tight corners and send the measurements to the supplier before paying.
What deserves your money
Ask what is inside the cushions, whether covers can be removed, how the fabric should be cleaned and what the warranty actually covers. Sit on every section. Check whether the frame creaks and whether the cushions recover after you stand.
The best sofa is rarely the one that photographs best. It is the one that still feels comfortable on a tired Tuesday night and does not turn your living room into an obstacle course.
TAKE THIS WITH YOU
Tape the sofa’s footprint on the floor, sit the way you live and measure the entire delivery route before paying.
