Why does your phone battery hate the heat?

The phone on your dashboard has a bigger problem than the charging percentage.

GOT 30 SECONDS?

The short answer

Heat can permanently reduce battery capacity. Keeping your phone out of a hot car or direct sun can matter more than obsessing over the perfect charging percentage.

A familiar Malaysian setup

Navigation is running. The phone is charging. Sunlight is pouring through the windscreen. It is a convenient place for a screen—and an uncomfortable place for a battery. Think about where the phone sits, not just which cable is plugged in.

Battery life is not battery lifespan

Battery life is how long today’s charge lasts. Lifespan is how long the battery remains useful before replacement. Apple warns that ambient temperatures above 35°C can permanently damage capacity, particularly during charging. Those are Apple’s device guidelines; check your own manufacturer’s limits.

The percentage is not the whole story

A phone at 100% with an ageing battery does not hold the same amount of energy it did when new. Full means full for its current capacity. A shorter day between charges is not automatically proof that an app is misbehaving.

A simpler routine

Keep the phone shaded and avoid leaving it in a hot parked car. If it becomes unusually hot while charging, stop adding heat and let it cool naturally. Use the built-in charging protections where available. A battery-care routine should make life easier, not turn every charge into homework.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Protect the battery from heat before worrying about a perfect charging ritual.
